What a day, what a day, what a day...

There’s three little words which, when thrust together, make music lovers the world over recoil in terror. Two short but not-so-sweet words which put fear in the hearts of grown men. Even the sort who are covered in tattoos and who ride motor cycles.

People go out of their way to avoid using them, and would certainly never admit to… You know… Liking them.

What is this horror, I hear you cry? Please take the chance to brace yourself…

Boy band concert.

Fourteen year old girls wearing flashing devil horns, waving banners in the air and screaming, non-stop, for an hour and a half of shiny, happy pop music – it’s your average muso’s worst nightmare.

So what was my reaction when I found out McFly were playing at Glasgow’s SECC? Quite frankly, there was no holding me back.

I, unlike many, am a full paid-up member of the Boy Band Lover’s Fan Club. Or at least I would be, if it existed. It may be unconventional in a 20-year old, it might eat into my bank balance, and maybe it does stop me from finding potential partners – more because no one can measure up to Danny from McFly than they think I’m weird. But there really is no feeling like the thrill of a boy band concert.

And this year’s McFly arena tour, to accompany their greatest hits album, didn’t fail to disappoint.

Bursting onto the stage with my favourite, That Girl (“Duuuude, she’s amazing and I can’t believe you got that giiiirl!”), romping their way through Rhianna’s Umbrella, tearing the auditorium apart with Please, Please and closing with debut Five Colours in Her Hair, McFly didn’t fail to disappoint.

My throat was sore from screaming, my legs aching from the crazy girl dancing which got me many a funny look, absolutely sweating from the heat in the bloody place – I sauntered home with my tour programme clutched to my chest and happy.

Just when you think the boys are starting to stumble – latest single The Heart Never Lies is, after all, utter crap with knobs on – they go and do that and make you fall in love with them all over again.

What a performance, what a night, what a band. Thank you, McFly. You’ve still got it.
